Able Seafarer Deck (AB) is a credentialed mariner who serves as a member of the deck crew on large commercial vessels generally over 100 gross tons, most tugboats. ABs are specifically in charge of all deck activity. They are in charge of deck maintenance, using vessels mooring equipment, securing cargo, and passenger safety. The (AB) rating is a higher level than OS ordinary Seafarer, and comes with a greater level of responsibility.

This course will teach the student basic Navigation Rules, Watchkeeping principles, Deck Safety and Dec`k Maintenance, as well as proper Cargo Handling and associated responsibilities to support the Licensed Officer Billets onboard a vessel. Upon course completion, students will apply for their qualifying level of Able Seafarer deck ratings dependent on personal sea time. The Able Seafarer (AB) rating is required to work on commercial vessels greater than 100 gross tons filling an AB position.
